Giving Back
Through music, advocacy, and action — Melissa Etheridge’s work extends beyond the stage into advocacy, healing, community support, and social impact.
Founded by Melissa Etheridge and friends, the Etheridge Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to support groundbreaking scientific research into new plant medicine and psychedelic treatments for opioid use disorder (OUD).
Since coming out in 1993, Melissa has championed safe spaces for LGBTQ+ young people. The foundation partners with local organizations to fund mentorship, crisis support, and visibility programs.
After being diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer in October 2004, Melissa successfully underwent a lumpectomy, radiation, and chemotherapy. She has been in remission and cancer-free for over two decades, becoming a prominent advocate for holistic health, cancer awareness, and medicinal cannabis use.
Winner of the Academy Award for "I Need to Wake Up," written for An Inconvenient Truth, Melissa continues to use her platform and the Foundation to amplify climate education and activism.
